MetroMail - Mail UI by clindhartsen MetroMail - Mail UI by clindhartsen
MetroMail Series:

Edit #1: I've added a contacts UI, which is available via this [link]

Edit #2: Added background to UI, different desktop background

Edit #3: Changed icons of multiple buttons on bottom, adjusted colors

Continuing on this concept, I've added some simple elements to the UI, as well as rebuilt the base to get a better idea of how it would be laid out.

The next group of refinements will likely be to improve the buttons on the bottom, refine the navigation, and maybe reconsider if more color should be added. Also, there should be an edition with the other conceptual elements shown.

This is all concept, and I'm not a programmer, but any thoughts on how this could be improved?

The following are links to the other parts of this concept:
Calendar | Contacts | Mail

I'd love to see such an e-mail client. It's a great design! Infact, Windows 9 should look like this...

If I could talk to a programmer, would you be interested in getting this app out for windows 7 and 8.

I was just thinking, but if you can't make this into a desktop app, maybe you can try this on a website?

I really wish this was an actual skin, it's so clean and modern.

The only criticism I have is that 'message' isn't spelled correctly in 'new message' :XD:

All these people doing spell check :meow: I'll get that fixed eventually, lol. :)

I don't have experience in doing so, but I'm sure someone out there could create a skin for Thunderbird.

everywhere is great, in my view as the main part should be slightly larger than the other. If font is big, this not elegant :p

Alright, I'll consider that.

Just as explanation though, the different font sizes, including the larger sizes, hits me as a better way to present where the e-mail messages are from, or main titles overall. The issue I have with, for example, how Windows Live Mail is set up right now, is that it almost feels like too much is on the screen. The ribbon seems like overkill for a basic program, and then a heavy, packed list looks a little complex to the eyes.

This may give the name departments (those with bigger font) a different color underneath - light shade?

Beautiful, I love it.

Do you see this ever becoming a reality in the future?

(Sorry that I have no criticism at the moment. It's pretty early over here.)

There's three ways I could see this becoming a reality:

1. Microsoft sees success in the Metro UI being understood well in mobile and experiments on the PC to see if it's more efficient for people in simpler programs [aka Windows Live Mail vs. Outlook] than Ribbon [which I am beginning to think works well in complex programs, aka Office]

2. The people who designed MetroTwit take on this project, or another programmer does

3. If I learn programming myself.

Otherwise, this is all experimentation I can only dream to be real :)

I was actually responded to be one of the guys who helped create that program and asked whether they should put them on the list of Metro apps to create, which I said yes but I don't want them to do over promise [something along those lines]

I still wish Microsoft would push the Live programs this way, the Ribbon hits me as overkill for a rather basic mail program, which does alot, yes, but seems to have a lot of places where the ribbon simply isn't useful

Just a few notes + thoughts

I agree about the ribbon. It's nice and all, but for the Live programs it doesn't really work. I'm rocking the new Live Beta programs and the ribbon on mail is overkill.

It pushed differences through UI again, but Metro seems much more suited to simpler applications [Phones, Zune] and would work good for novice programs, such as Windows Live, and could make the gap between the online UI and the application UI that much thinner. I mean, this mail app would look different, but there's no reason something similar could not be the base for Windows Live Mail online, with the window buttons and such replaced with other Live services possible.

*ding* I think I know the next piece to create once I finish the other parts of the UI for this fantasy application

Oh wow, that is really cool. Someone should create a website show casing all of the different "metro" styled applications. Or a group here on DevianART.

Really, really, fantastic. I'm the biggest fan of minimalistic design.

They only help I could give is to perhaps lighten the load. The left column, and especially the far right column look overcrowded -there's too much information on screen. Maybe a 'more' or '>' (or something of the sort) button perhaps?

Alright, I'll put that into consideration. At least in my mind, there seems to be a middleground between too little content, and too much, and there may be a little lightening needed.

"but any thoughts on how this could be improved?"

only suggestion is make the timestamp (the time the emails were received) a little smaller. i wish this was an actual program. it looks easy to use and is very clean.

Are you talking about the date stamp on the list on the left?

I would build this out as software if I had the knowledge, but I don't sadly enough, though I'm beginning to think maybe I should start learning at least enough coding/design to do a WinPho app.

:iconrea002:

well, WinPhone apps are coded in C#, so if you can make a WinPhone app, it wouldnt take to long to learn to make a Windows desktop app.

Is that the current Windows Phone you're talking about, or the upcoming Windows Phone 7? I really need to re-download the developers software and get experimenting on it...

i believe WinMo 7 uses C#. M$ said Zune apps and WinPhone apps will be cross compatible, and Zune uses XNA Game Studio, which is a C# game dev kit.
